Dekalb County Schools

Principal

Principal's Message

Dear Ashford Park School Community,

It is a great honor and privilege to serve as the new principal at Ashford Park Elementary School.  Ashford Park ES ranks amongst the top 4% of schools in the State of Georgia and through hard work and collaboration, I am certain that we can continue to reach our academic goals and soar to new heights.

I am originally from Decatur, Georgia and attended elementary, middle, and high school in the Dekalb County School District. I earned a Bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education from Spelman College, a Master’s Degree in Reading Education from Clemson University, and a Specialist’s Degree in Curriculum and Instruction from Lincoln Memorial University. I hold additional certifications in Leadership, Gifted, English Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), Reading, and Teacher Support. I am in my 16th year in Education, serving as a former 2nd grade teacher, gifted teacher, and Assistant Principal.

While serving as Assistant Principal of Ashford Park ES for the past four years, I have developed and implemented monthly Instructional Planning meetings, data talks, various professional learning sessions, Writing Wednesdays, Teacher Tip Tuesdays, Test Taking Tuesdays, March Milestone Madness, and After School Tutorial. Additionally, I planned and executed After School @ Ashford Park (ASAP), After School Tutorial, Odyssey of the Mind, Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS), the EAGLE store, EAGLE tickets, teacher shadowing observations, a seamless administration of all district and statewide assessments, a schoolwide master schedule that allows for more teacher planning and departmentalization in 4th and 5th grades, and the Ashford Park School Facebook and Twitter social media pages.

As principal of Ashford Park ES, I will collaborate with each of you to continue the tradition of student success. I will work with teachers to deliver high quality instruction and implement differentiated instruction in all classrooms.  I will be a voice for all students when I see programs and opportunities that they may benefit from academically, socially, and emotionally.  I will partner with the Ashford Park PTA, Foundation, Principal’s Advisory Council, and business/community partners to bring about additional opportunities and funds for our school.  I will communicate effectively with all stakeholders the mission and vision of Ashford Park through everything that I do. I am excited to partner with each of you and ready to get to work to continue the great things that are already happening at our wonderful school, Ashford Park Elementary! We are EAGLES: Exceptional Achievers, Growing, and Leading Everyday!

Thank you for your continued support!

Sincerely,

Ms. Tonya E. Freeman, Ed.S
